First NAS: 04/2021 - The first machine was just intended to be a NAS1 for films and files, it slowly evolved in a full-sized server but the name 'NAS' remains.
From FreeNAS to UnRaid: 24/07/2021 - We switched from FreeNAS2 to UnRaid3
First domain: 21/07/2022 - Wow, we are now officially part of the Internet.
Domain switch to thepacta.net: 17/05/2023 - Mainly for pricing but also for the .net TLD4.
2.5 Gbps network switch: 01/06/2023 - Not very useful for outside services but very helpful for connecting high speed local machines with the NAS.
rm -rf Films: 2023 SEV1 data loss - The most devastating data loss the server has ever experienced, one single wrong command that had to delete a different folder ended up erasing the full film library. - Memorandum: check the commands twice before executing.
2.5 Gbps internet fiber: 13/03/2025 - Upgraded from 1 Gbps fiber to 2.5 hugely decreasing download and upload time.
Backup server: 24/12/2025 - First backup server for critical data located offsite.
Webservers
Selfhosted reverse proxy: 07/11/2025 - Finally free from the restrictions imposed from Cloudflare5, a big step to self-hosting and a huge step for securety concerns!
docs.thepacta.net: 28/11/2025 - Fed up from trying to comprehend what the hell was going on with services we didn't look for a wile we decided to start documenting our journey here for other to learn from our mistakes.
Streaming
Patflix: 2021 - A really stupid idea, a static HTML without a single line of JS that we imagined could have competed with Netflix, needless to say the project was scrapped when we weren't able to reproduce a MKV and AVI video on a browser.
Plex: 2022 - A first serious streaming platform that was good at the start but that quickly became frustrating and painful to work with being its closed source.
Jellyfin setup: 2024 - What a big and scary project to set up! but the call of freedom of the open source was stronger than the pain.
Arr stack setup: 2025 - A big step in the direction of a fully automated streaming network.
Game servers
Crafty Controller: 2023 - Silly attempt of hosting the first Minecraft server, we didn't comprehend how to use the software and left it with frustration. What a shame.
Pterodactyl switch: 2023 - Quite the step up from Crafty Controller, incredibly complicated to set up but it was worth it!
First Dynmap: 2024 - Wow, cool screenshots for a Minecraft plugin! i wander what it does? Curiosity let us to one of the first webserver that was not a streaming platform.
Pelican switch: 15/11/2025 - Cool CSS, a fork of Pterodactyl? Let's try that! Great choice.
Public Pelican panel: 15/11/2025 - We tried soo many times to host the panel on a public site, with Pterodactyl and with Pelican, soo many hours wasted for a not so important feature, but super satisfying when we finally did it!
Bungecoord to Velocity: 15/112025 - Switching from Pterodactyl to Pelican we had to recreate all the game servers, so why not try some new software? Velocity6 ended up being the right choice for our ecosystem.
Bluemap switch: 25/11/2025 - Having multiple Dynmaps we wanted to unify all of them under a single site, searching how to do that we ended up finding Bluemap, and what a find!
Bedrock support: 23/12/2025 - Sometimes playing with friends meens managing a Minecraft network, configuring plugins and understanding how to cross platform with Geyser7.
First minecarft modded server: 10/01/2026 - This wasn't the first try, but many tutorials later the first Fabric8 Minecraft server was created and could have been accessed from the public succesfully.
Pelican panel & wings failed update: 04/02/2026 SEV2 ended 3 days later - Panel v1.0.0-beta31 and Wings v1.0.0-beta22 where two updates that succesfully fuck up everithing about Pelican, apparently the changes for the config files where not well documented and we ended up digging a rabbithole tring to get our system back up. - Memorandum: check ALL links in the changelogs, expetialy if they point to a second changelog triple the lenght of the first.
Pelican panel plugins failed: 07/02/2026 SEV4 ended in few minutes - Not really sure what happened but apparently Pelican panel didn't like the new plugins feature and decided to explode. Probably caused by some dependency of the plugin.
VPS
First VPS: 07/11/2025 - What the hell is a VPS9? never mind, now we have one in Romania, and we are routing all traffic through it.
VPS switch: 16/12/2025 - The Romanian VPS had been under attack for quite some times and we couldn't ignore such low uptime, so we decided to try a different VPS, one in Frankfurt.
